When I was young, I wanted everything to be natural. I wanted to look natural, use natural products, eat natural foods. I scorned heavy makeup, even when it was part of being onstage. It was the first thing to come off after the costume. Oh, how I hated the feel of heavy makeup on my skin. Greasepaint. I am not alone in this bizarre rejection of the very fundamental tool of my own trade. There is a race to the makeup remover after almost every show I have ever done! I think with good reason, too, since greasepaint can suffocate your skin. I view it as a necessary evil. Without the heavy stage makeup, faces become flat, pancake-like ovals dancing on the stage without definition or expression. It is an absolute must. Most people who know me, know I cater to the natural look for every day, preferring to look like a hippie over a diva.
